Drought information for improving preparedness in the western states

Abstract

Nineteen Western Governors' Association (WGA) states drought managers attested that they need better monitoring and forecast information to more effectively prepare for drought and reduce impacts. First states need guidance and methods to develop and select useful indicators, to test them, and to evaluate and improve their effectiveness. Second, in the quest to provide early warning information, the expertise and experience of drought managers should be tapped; it is important to understand the information they need to reduce impacts, and to develop it with them, which ultimately can promote its operational use and economic value.
