Gendered ageism in older Australian's experiences of labour market exclusion

Abstract

With population ageing, lifting mature age employment and extending working lives have become central policy concerns. Yet the proportion of older workers who are now jobless or under-employed is higher than it has been for several years. While the reasons for this are varied, ageism is widely regarded as a critical issue facing older workers. But beyond surveys of the incidence of age discrimination, how ageism operates to differentially exclude older men and women remains relatively under-examined in Australia.
