Abstract
The electrokinetic characteristics of muscovite mica in contact with monovalent, divalent, and triva-lent aqueous ions have been measured with an apparatus specially designed for measuring streaming potentials of flat surfaces. Modeling the data obtained by using a Gouy-Chapman-Stern-Grahame model shows that although a triple-layer model can describe the observed experimental trends there are some obvious limitations with the model. A comparison of the f potentials measured on the mica system with force balance derived potentials is also made. A good correlation between the two types of measurements exists for systems with 1:1 electrolytes; however, considerable differences are noted for 2:1..
