Abstract

Recombinant porcine somatotropin is a daily injectable metabolic modifier for growing pigs while bovine somatotropin increases milk production in dairy cows.Somatotropin regulates the development and growth of muscle, bone, and adipose tissue, and plays an integral role in the coordination of metabolism in mammals. The increase in protein is considered to be due to an increase in protein synthesis and the magnitude of the response is in?uenced by nutritional factors with no adverse health or welfare aspects.Somatotropin causes muscle hypertrophy rather than hyperplasia resulting in a slight decrease in meat tenderness, undetectable by most sensory panels.
