Psychological predispositions and associated behaviors, and emotions play an important role in the development of heart disease. Some individuals are psychologically vulnerable because of a combination of temperament and early socialization. When vulnerable people encounter stressful psychosocial environments, chronic negative patterns often result. These reactions are accompanied by physiological disturbances, social disruptions, and unhealthy behaviors. These disturbances may then interact with unhealthy life span trajectories, resulting in increased risk of illness that is comparable in size to that of many other commonly noted health risks.
