Abstract

This article reviews theory and research on the increasing presence of women in management and examines how this affects gender inequality among subordinates. Whereas it is true that women in upper management are more likely to reduce inequality among subordinates, most female managers are located at the lower rungs of corporate hierarchies where they have little impact on prevailing patterns of gender inequality. We call for further research on the location of women in management hierarchies and how this could affect their careers of their subordinates.
