Abstract
An average Scottish home emits about 3 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually which is higher than the UK's average figure of around 2.75 tonnes CO2 emissions. As a result, the Scottish Government has set a target for new build housing, which can secure the zero carbon emissions by 2016/17. Nonetheless, to realise the net zero emissions in housing operation, much attention should be paid to the energy efficiency measures in existing housing where the energy usage of households accounts for a significant portion of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
