Abstract
It seems that universities are riding waves of government policy-driven and technology-driven change over which they have little control and whose outcomes are uncertain. The recent rise of massive open online courses (MOOCs), combined with a global eagerness for bringing subjects online or into blended physical–virtual environments, has the potential to change our practice of education, the conceptualization of the university, the academic workforce and the very architecture of university campuses.
