Abstract

Aim: Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the commonest cause of legal blindness in individuals over 50 years of age. Although neovascular AMD only makes up around 10% of the cases of AMD, it contributes to about 90% of the cases of severe vision loss. The treatment of neovascular AMD has been revolutionised by the introduction of anti vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. With regular treatment, most patients can maintain vision and around one third of patients can have significant improvements in acuity.
