Application of a phased array technique to DNS-generated turbulent subsonic jet data

Abstract

A phased array technique was applied to Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data of fully turbulent subsonic jets. The DNS were conducted of fully turbulent flow exiting a nozzle into a laminar co-flow. Including the nozzle in the simulations and considering fully turbulent flow inside the nozzle ensures that all possible noise generation mechanisms are represented. The target Reynolds number, based on jet exit velocity and nozzle diameter was Rej = 7, 500 for all cases. The sound radiation from the nozzle/jet configuration is studied via a recently developed phased array approach.
