Abstract

Advertising is an industry that involves a three-way relationship between advertisers, their agencies, and the media. The history of this industry dates from the late nineteenth century in the industrialized countries, while the twentieth century has seen its growth on a global scale. Advertising's high visibility and pervasiveness has attracted much social criticism and successive analytic approaches over this time, with recent attention focusing on advertising's role in the formation of brands and social identities.
