The 'Third Wave Project' is a consortium of international research teams which work together on research studies into values and valuing in school mathematics education. This paper reports on the Japanese team's investigation of what students value and find important in their mathematics learning experiences at school, identifying the mathematics educational values through the use of the questionnaire method. The data analysis has led to a deeper understanding of what and how the students value school mathematics education, leading to the identification of components that constitute each mathematics educational value in culturally unique ways.
