Professor Emeritus Kaye Stacey held the Foundation Chair of Mathematics Education from 1992 until her retirement. She continues her active interest in mathematics education practice and research. The goal of her work is to help more children learn more mathematics, learn it better, find it more interesting and relevant to their lives and enjoy it more. She does this through her research, her work in teacher education and her ongoing activities related to mathematics curriculum and teaching.

Professor Stacey is author of approximately 500 published works, including research articles, books and articles for mathematics teachers and many electronic resources. Her interests encompass mathematical thinking and problem solving, student conceptual development, curriculum, and new technologies for teaching mathematics. In 2024, she won the Emma Castelnuovo Medal of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction for her innovative and influential contributions to the practice of mathematics education and her ground-breaking portfolio of resources for schools and teacher education. She was Chair of the international Mathematics Expert Group for the OECD's 2012 PISA survey.

Professor Stacey’s most famous books are “Thinking Mathematically” (with Mason and Burton, 1982 & 2012) which has been translated into a dozen languages, and “Strategies for Problem Solving” (with Groves 2006). Her most recent book is “Learning and Teaching for Mathematical Literacy: Making Mathematics Useful for Everyone” (with Burkhardt and Pead, 2024). Her most popular paper on the internet is “What is mathematical thinking and why is it important?” with over 110000 reads. Her major electronic resource is the innovative “Specific Mathematics Assessments That Reveal Thinking” (SMART::tests, smartvic.com with Steinle, Price and Gvozdenko), which provides teachers with an easily accessible but informative diagnosis of each students’ conceptual understanding of selected topics. She was a Director of the reSolve mathematics curriculum project of the Australian Academy of Science until 2018. Kaye Stacey has always been an active contributor to Australian school mathematics curriculum and assessment, including as a Board member of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority until 2024.
