Dr Surinder Singh Chauhan is an Animal Scientist and his research program strives to deliver solutions to promote sustainable, and efficient livestock production systems (cattle, sheep, goat, and pigs) capable of producing quality animal protein for the consumers. The premise of his research program is to develop suitable strategies (molecular genetic markers to assist in selection for thermotolerance, and nutrigenomics approach to regulate metabolism) to mitigate heat stress impacts on food animal production, and to identify and deliver innovative tools to improve meat quality (specifically by elucidating the genetic, molecular and biochemical basis of meat quality).

Dr Chauhan obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, and Master of Veterinary Science from CSK, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, India. Dr Chauhan moved to Australia in the year 2011 following his selection for prestigious Australian Leadership Award (PhD Scholarship) by the Australian Government. He completed his PhD in the Faculty of Veterinary and agricultural Sciences at The University of Melbourne in 2014. Recently, Dr Chauhan completed his Post doctorate in Animal Science (Muscle Biology and Meat Science) at The Ohio State University, Columbus, USA. Dr Chauhan has multinational experience in teaching and research in Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and has delivered his services successfully in Australia, India and USA. Before joining The University of Melbourne, Dr Chauhan has served the State of Himachal Pradesh, India, for more than 10 years and has provided his services as Senior Veterinary officer, and Veterinary Officer in the various Civil Veterinary Hospitals, and Livestock Breeding Farms. He has also served as Assistant Professor in The Department of Veterinary Physiology, and Livestock production and Management, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at The CSK, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, India. Dr Chauhan has presented his research at various national and international conferences in different countries (Australia, China, Denmark, India, and USA), including a key note paper, and has published more than 30 refereed research papers. Along with strong research interests, Dr Chauhan is coordinating Applied Animal Reproduction and Genetics (undergraduate leve), and Genetics and Animal Breeding (postgraduate level) subjects, and is committed to endeavor high quality teaching and student supervision to enrich student learning experience and skill development for the industry and academia.
