Stephen is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research interests lie in questions of political and ethical concern for education, especially as these questions intersect with culture. His scholarship draws on postcolonial and other critical and social theories to examine educational theory, policy, and practice.

While Stephen's research and publications have covered a wide and diverse range of themes and contexts, the common thread throughout his research is the critical examination of the politics of concepts and discourses in education that often appear as a moral good.

This has been at the core of publications on humanism, postcolonial critique, humility, borders, wellbeing and counselling in schools, DEIJ in international schools, policy discourse of care in schools, commonly accepted models of educational leadership, global citizenship education, and environmental and climate change education.

He has recently co-edited a forthcoming book titled Imagining anti-oppressive education futures: agitations for justice and is leading a major project funded by the International Baccalaureate to examine the impact of IB educator certificate university courses.

Current and future research seeks to examine:

the implications of the concepts of post-growth and degrowth for the task of education;
the political and ethical dimensions of the field of international schooling (including the International Baccalaureate) - with a focus on India;
critical examinations of cosmopolitanism.
